h = 81 cm, weight: ca.320 kg
CNC milled Chinese Bluestone
exhibited on the grounds of Oil Street Art Space
Based on a 3D scan of an incredible intricate rock from Qingzhou in Shandong province. The surface of the original rock shows a complex relation of erosion resulting in miniature cavities, and striations. The rock is reminiscent in its shine and geometrical complexity of slag, an industrial residue of the extraction of Iron from ore. The work extends this narrative through balancing the rough cut of the rock, with the replication of the actual complex surface. It further extends the excavation into the mass of the rock, mimicking the famous Taihu stones, thus creating a hybrid new form of scholarly rock. The meta-morph is 81 cm in height and weights 300 kg. The original stone is 30 cm in height and weights about 10 kg.
